Overview

A walk connecting the North and the West coast of Crete.

Walking time: 1½ hours
Walking distance: 5Km
Total time: 3 hours
Difficulty: easy-medium
Terrain: mostly wide country tracks, some rocky parts

This is a short walk for those who love sea views.

This linear walk starts in a traditional village, about 10 minutes drive from Kissamos and finishes in Falassarna, on the West coast.

You start by walking uphill, crossing a variety of habitats, then turn off the road onto a small trail through the maquis. Then walk on wide tracks through the inescapable olive groves. The route goes uphill, and you reach a dirt track with open views on Kissamos Bay. A little further, you arrive at the ridge and look West at the infinite shades of blue sea.

As you walk down, the landscape is more barren. Low Mediterranean vegetation, thyme bushes, exposed rocks cover the land. In the distance, beyond the blue waters of Falasarna, we see small rocky islands.
Your walk finishes in Falasarna, where you have the option to visit the ruins of the ancient Greek harbour, lifted 6m above sea level by an earthquake almost 2,000 years ago! Or you can go for a refreshing dip into the crystal-clear waters, or simply enjoy a drink at the cafe overlooking the bay.

Walking shoes or sandals, trainers also fine.

To be able to walk for approx. 2 hours, partly on rocky terrain.
