Ebike ride to Sasalos

An Winter Ebike tour in West Crete – Or is it Autumn?

The weekend promised rain.
Stubbornly, we arranged to go out on Saturday morning, ever the optimistic riders we are.
And the day rewarded us with a beautiful ride.

We started from the small village of Deliana, strategically picked as the site of a great taverna, where we could finish our route and sit down for lunch at the end.

The route delivered.

The scenery past Malathiros is spectacular, a smooth descent after a brief climb, skirting gorge views, Kissamos bay in the distance and an impressive hillside with a heavy, seemingly recent rockfall.

After that, the road sits right next to the river bed until Sasalos, a lush valley that keeps its cool even in the summer.

A little bit further we go off-road, we leave the tarmac in Milones to explore the route over the mountain to the next valley. The going is good, the climb is gradual, the terrain is decent, the views infinite. That means we spot in the distance also the black clouds loaded with rain. Are they coming for us? They are still pretty far…

We ride through some chestnut woods suspended in autumn and come down to Floria, some fun on the easy track, especially for those with a full suspension ebike!
Here we come to a short section of a so-called busy, wide road, but we don’t really have time to notice, we speed down on the perfect surface at full speed and we bid goodbye to the cars to hit the dirt again just before Kakopetros.

Again the track has really good surface for a pleasant ride. The very last section, just before Deliana, is paved again and pretty steep, for more speed records!

Somewhat chilled after all the downhill, we find the taverna, park the bikes, order our delicious food and the first drops of rain start coming down.

But the things we have seen today keep our hearts warm.
