The E4 (European Long Distance) hiking trail runs the length of Crete – almost 400km – continuously from Kissamos, in West Crete to Kato Zakros in the East.
The section of the E4 in the Chania – West Crete region is a stunning trek. Starting in Kissamos, it takes you down the West coast of Crete to Elafonissi (approx 55km) then hugs the South coast of the Chania region from Elafonissi to Frangocastello (approx 83km). An alternative route diverges from the South coast at either Sougia or Agia Roumeli, and heads up through Agia Eirini (from Sougia) or Samaria gorge (from Agia Roumeli) and continues through the White Mountains towards Askifou. The path then stays along the centre of Crete, taking you through the mountain ranges in Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi provinces, before descending to the seaside village of Kato Zakros in the very East of Crete.
It is a challenging hike, and only recommended for experienced walkers as a through-hike, to hike the full Cretan E4 needs 28 days and upwards. Since the path is split into sections that are achievable in a day or two, with villages or accommodation along most of it, there are also plenty of options available for day hikes – do ask us for advice!
If you like the sound of traversing the whole of Crete but don’t have the time or inclination to do it on foot, we also offer a 9 day Coast to Coast e-bike riding trip – check it out!
