Kayak Samaria coastline

A fantastic trip to see the wild coast and mountains of South Crete from the sea, kayaking sit-on-tops.
We paddle along the remote coastline, alongside the cliffs, the caves, the wild Mediterranean maquis, the White Mountains just above us as we go from laid-back Sougia to the exit of Samaria gorge in Agia Roumeli village, in a sea that goes from crystal clear to deep blue.

Day 1 :

Transportation
We set off from Kissamos or Chania and drive across the rugged interior of Crete from coast to coast on scenic mountain roads for approximately an hour and a half. We get to Sougia where we leave land and launch for our adventure.

The Kayak
We launch straight into the adventure. Along the way, for about 3 hours of paddling, we will see no signs of civilization.
The coastline is wild, steep cliffs, rocky caves. We see small chapels built on top of rocks. We take a break on a beach that is the exit to one of the many long and steep Cretan gorges. We go around an impressive cape. After all these amazing encounters, we get to the bay of Agia Roumeli, where the longest gorge of Samaria dives into the sea.

The sea
We take advantage of the sit-on-tops and jump in the blue element. We don our masks and snorkels and we marvel at the colours, the deep blues from the abyss, the milky white from the fine sand, the turquoise of the clear water.

The landing and return
We land in Agia Roumeli, a remote village with no road access, where we can enjoy a drink at a seafront cafe. When the ferry arrives, we load our kayaks and return to Sougia by ferry, enjoying the ride.
